Just Throw Strikes
(for Tim Redding)

The Astros had four aces, they were one pitcher short
They'd need someone to start every fifth day
Before spring training started, they said I'd be the one
Because I had a decent ERA

Some guys think I'm a loser, I went ten and fourteen
They measure you by games you lost and won
So when the season started and I went down oh-and-three
They said I wasn't getting the job done

But I'd take the ball, I'd take the mound
I'd tune it up, try and turn it around
Oh yeah, they tell me just throw strikes
And those who've never played the game
Want to take the credit, pass the blame
Oh yeah, they tell me just throw strikes
They tell me just throw strikes

Sometimes it all goes smoothly, you get the hitters out
But a teammate makes an error on a play
And you manage to pitch through it and nobody seems to care
'Cause they had you up by two runs all the way

No one ever notices when things are going right
They only want to point out what went wrong
So maybe I don't listen well to what they have to say
I just come out ready to pitch strong

And I'll take the ball, I'd take the mound
I'll tune it up, try and turn it around
Oh yeah, they tell me just throw strikes
And those who've never played the game
Want to take the credit, pass the blame
Oh yeah, they tell me just throw strikes
They tell me just throw strikes
