With the reg'lar season over
We moved on into October.
The Astros proved to be the best
In the National League West.
I started for the Mets and my line when the night was done
Seven innings, with five strikeouts and one run.
Nothing happened the first inning,
But as the second was beginning
Davis sent a 1-0 ball
O'er the center-field wall.
They wouldn't score again, but then the damage had been done
Seven innings, with five strikeouts and one run.
Mike Scott gave us a beating.
We thought he might be cheating.
We even had Doug Harvey check the ball.
He kept throwing us those splitters,
Confounding all our hitters
And tallying fourteen strikeouts in all.
I was hit for in the eighth
And we had two men on base.
That's the best that we could do
As once again Mike Scott came through.
And now you know the story of how I lost game 1
Seven innings, with five strikeouts and a Glenn Davis home run.
